Course Description
Codes of Ethics examines how ethical principles are codified into formal documents that guide professional and organizational behavior. This course explores the ethical questions college students face, reviews the Code of Ethics for Government Service, examines federal ethics laws including conflict of interest and anti-bribery statutes, addresses the ethical issues surrounding gene therapy, and guides learners through the process of writing, implementing, and reviewing a code of conduct. Learners will develop the ability to analyze various codes of ethics, write a simple code of ethics, and evaluate the effectiveness of codes of ethical conduct.
Course Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Identify common ethical questions faced by students and professionals and explain how personal codes of ethics guide decision-making
- Describe the key provisions of the Code of Ethics for Government Service
- Identify the major federal ethics laws governing government employees including anti-bribery, conflict of interest, and post-employment restrictions
- Describe the ethical questions surrounding gene therapy including germline gene therapy and access and equity concerns
- Identify the standard sections that should be included in a written code of conduct
- Describe effective strategies for getting staff input when writing a code of conduct
- Explain multiple methods for implementing a code of conduct in the workplace
- Write and evaluate a simple code of ethics applicable to a health care or professional setting
Course Format and Faculty
Course Format:
Online linked resources and lectures available anytime, 24/7. Includes one multiple-choice exam taken at the end of the course. A passing grade of 75% is required. Upon passing, learners may print their certificate immediately.
Course Developers and Instructors:
R. Klimes, PhD, MPH (Johns Hopkins University) is a scholar and author in health-related research, health behaviors, ethics, end-of-life care, and overall wellness. He has written numerous research reports and books and has held academic and leadership roles in higher education and public health internationally.
