Course Description

Alcohol Problems provides an introduction to selected important topics related to alcohol problems, addiction, and wellness. This course covers how to identify signs of alcohol abuse, the short- and long-term effects of alcohol on the body, the CAGE assessment tool, strategies for helping a friend or loved one with a drinking problem, situational abstinence guidelines, and prevention and treatment approaches. The course also reviews research studies on alcohol problems in high-risk groups and treatment outcomes.

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe alcohol abuse and distinguish it from alcohol dependence
  2. Identify the warning signs of a drinking or drug problem in individuals
  3. Apply the CAGE assessment tool to screen for possible alcohol problems
  4. Describe the short-term and long-term effects of alcohol use on the body
  5. Identify the major health consequences of long-term heavy drinking including liver disease, cancer, and pancreatitis
  6. Explain strategies for helping a friend or loved one who has a drinking problem
  7. Describe the situational rules for abstinence and identify situations where alcohol is prohibited
  8. Present plans for an alcohol problem prevention program drawing on evidence-based approaches and community resources

Online linked resources and lectures available anytime, 24/7. Includes one multiple-choice exam taken at the end of the course. A passing grade of 75% is required. Upon passing, learners may print their certificate immediately.
