Course Description

Aging Safely Self-Care examines the key areas of safety, health, and environmental awareness that support healthy aging and self-care. This course covers home safety strategies and fall prevention, the physiological and psychological impact of aging and death on individuals and families, the five stages of grief, guidance on evaluating health care services including HMO access and quality, and the daily environmental practices that protect both personal and community health. Learners will gain practical tools for identifying risks, improving self-care, and supporting aging individuals and their families across the continuum of care.

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Apply course content to assess the safety, health care, and environmental needs of aging individuals
  • Identify common home and environmental safety risks and describe prevention strategies to reduce accidents, harassment, violence, and abuse
  • Apply a room-by-room home safety checklist to reduce fall and accident risks for older adults
  • Describe the physiological changes associated with normal aging and distinguish them from disease processes
  • Explain the five stages of grief and describe the emotional and physical responses associated with each stage
  • Identify key questions to ask when evaluating health care plans including access, benefits, quality of care, and cost
  • Describe the relationship between self-care and health care services in supporting healthy aging
  • Identify daily environmental protection practices and explain how they contribute to personal and community wellness

Course Format:

Online linked resources and lectures available anytime, 24/7. Includes one multiple-choice exam taken at the end of the course. A passing grade of 75% is required. Upon passing, learners may print their certificate immediately.
