Course Description

Character Education examines the principles, practices, and programs that help students and adults develop the habits of thought and action necessary to live and work together effectively as families, communities, and citizens. This course explores the definition and purpose of character education, the school’s role in teaching core ethical values, strategies for implementing character education comprehensively, and a wide range of online and state-level resources for educators, parents, and community partners. Learners will develop the emotional, intellectual, and moral understanding needed to support and promote character education in school, health care, and community settings.

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define character education and explain its role in developing ethical values and positive social behaviors in students and adults
  2. Describe the school’s responsibilities in implementing comprehensive character education programs
  3. Identify the four key steps schools are encouraged to take to successfully implement character education
  4. Explain the common threads in character education agendas across states including community involvement and integration into the education process
  5. Identify online resources and programs available to support character education in schools and communities
  6. Describe evidence-based approaches to evaluating character education interventions
  7. Explain how parents and community partners can reinforce character education values at home and in the community
  8. Apply character education principles to professional, health care, and community settings

Course Format and Faculty

Course Format:

Online linked resources and lectures available anytime, 24/7. Includes one multiple-choice exam taken at the end of the course. A passing grade of 75% is required. Upon passing, learners may print their certificate immediately.

Course Developers and Instructors:

R. Klimes, PhD, MPH (Johns Hopkins University) is a scholar and author in health-related research, health behaviors, ethics, end-of-life care, and overall wellness. He has written numerous research reports and books and has held academic and leadership roles in higher education and public health internationally.

Course Time:

Approximately 3 hours for online study, test taking, course evaluation feedback, and certificate printing.
